Spotlight on partners series

BHL – Bauhaus-Luftfahrt e.V

As part of the EXAELIA Partner spotlight series, we are pleased to introduce Bauhaus Luftfahrt e.V. – The Aviation Think Tank

The think tank Bauhaus Luftfahrt e.V. provides scientifically founded answers to the questions of tomorrow’s air mobility and points the way to climate neutrality. An international team of highly qualified experts in engineering, natural sciences, social sciences and economics creates a unique overall understanding of the field and builds bridges between science, business, politics and the public — institutionally funded, independent and unbiased.

The research center is a public-private partnership, funded by grants from the Free State of Bavaria, membership fees, public third-party funds, and industrial projects. Members include Airbus Aircraft, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), IABG Industrieanlagen-Betriebsgesellschaft, Liebherr Group Aerospace, and MTU Aero Engines

Strategic research areas include :

  • Technology Radar
  • Trend Monitor
  • Transition to Climate Neutrality
  • Future Aviation Fuels
  • Hydrogen Aviation
  • New Long Range
  • Urban & Regional (Air) Mobility
  • Novel Propulsion Concepts
  • (Hybrid-)Electric Aviation

In the EXAELIA project, Bauhaus Luftfahrt is investigating the design of a composite cucle engine (CCE) with a free-double-piston as an innovative propulsion concept for a long-range hydrogene aircraft. Based on these findings, flight test needs and a contribution to the flying test bed design and exploitation strategy for the studied propulsion system are provided.

Related Projects ?

Bauhaus Luftfahrt’s past and present involvement in several related European initiatives, such as MINIMAL Project, HYLENA Project , HOPE Horizon Europe project, H2020-IMOTHEP, Centreline or ULTIMATE underlines its competences in climate neutral air transport and sustainable propulsion technologies.
